simplified

I went back to Jonah. That image still hasn't been "realized." I think I lack the reference images for a"by memory" sketch, and i lack the ability to accomplish photo realism in drawing to accomplish it. I also think Ratio is a huge element to making this composition look good. I don't have that either. So i started playing with different ways to express the idea. Then i was watching an episode of LA Ink (a show about a tattoo shop) and i thought about tribal art. that's what lead to the second image. What do you think?

  1. I like the colors. Nice compliments with the moon and sky, and then analogous harmonies with the fish and water. I think it would be a bit tidier without the yellow on the sails, boat, and water. It's a great idea. Keep going. Save all your variations.

The "Tribal Art" is super! Love the sun-son and cross imagery. Your reduction to the essentials is masterful. I like the simplicity of this kind of thing. Simplifying is difficult. I have always admired business logos and other reductionist designs. The search for the core of the thing--ah.

First time I've heard of "Tribal Art." Tell us about it. It makes me think of African art. Much of it stylized reality and occasionally reduced to near abstraction. I have a woodcarving, a very stylized antelope, but--wow!--is it the essence of antelope!

    Same wow to your Jonah.

  2. The good thing about tribal art is that the tattoos hurt less. As Wisconsinites we really just don't get exposed to certain aspects of natures, like whales. It's difficult constructing a representation of an animal we've only seen in books and tv shows. Now, if your whale was simply a mis-scaled koi - I can tell where you can find some of those . . .
