VBS Puppet Videos

Here is a series of videos that I made for VBS.  All of the videos were shot without scripts, and a good ten minutes of planning.  Keeping that in mind., they didn't turn out too badly.  The kids helped with with the supporting characters.

Tad The Train Conductor

Meet Tad the Train Conductor

Kid's Bible Adventures (KBA) is doing a unit on transportation.  I built Tad to introduce the theme for this session of KBA and to help me tell the stories to the kids.  He is made out of foam, blizzard fleece, a whole lot of thread and a whole lot of glue.  I even made his little train conductor hat.  He is a "live hand" puppet.  My first live hand.  I am excited to see how well he works.  I wanted to give him some bright orange hair, but the sans hair looks ok too.

Next project is an orange monster puppet. 

Ears

Here are two drawings of ears.  One from the side and one from the back.  because of the plane changes in the ear, and because of the many different soft edges (form shadows) and hard edges (cast shadows) i found ears to be a challenge to draw.

lips #1

Lips.  They don't look quite right without a nose and a chin, but I am working on lips this week.  No, I'm not really working from a book, although I am referencing a few great books on facial anatomy.  One is  secrets to drawing realistic faces by Carrie Stuart Parks, and the other is a book that Micah just got for me, called drawing the head and hands by Andrew Loomis.  Most of this however is the result of teaching art class at school.

Noses

Here are the noses I picked.  (That joke never gets old!) I finally got back to my 6B lead.  Maybe a little too soft to get real good mid-tone, but it was fun sketching.

The Eyes have it

Eye wish the top eye on the bottom drawing would have been fully visible.  That was a decent one.  

Anyway, I'm working on eyes.  Trying to memorize the forms and how light falls across them (the light source is from above.  Next, I'll be drawing noses.  I'll pick some to post.  (Get it!  Pick some!  )

Drawing on the Right Side-prelims

Since I did these drawings, I completed a few of the other exercises. I had to draw the face vase, and copy and line drawing upside down without turning it around to make sense of the picture. That is as far as I got before I had to return the book to the library and pay a hefty fee for being overdue...BUT...i now have the book in e-format on my nook. So I plan on working at it still. Puppets making is going slower than I expected. ( i haven't even started)

salty VBS projects

As promised here is one salt shaker. It's pen and ink. I couldn't find a pencil when I started sketching, and my muse had been used up on the puppet and VBS project....so I just had to get through it....someone once told me art becomes something more when it's created even without a muse.....

Monster Puppet Musings

Well, I don't have a salt shaker, but i do have some sketches of a monster puppet I want to build. I definitely have a personality in mind for him, but I'm curious to see what you think he'd be like. I also have a VBS project to post, and then I'll get to the salt shaker. They're coming soon.

Elephant Bathtubs

Elephant Bathtubs. Here is my humble offering. The drawings were done some time ago, but my scanner is being packed up right now, so i couldn't post them until Micah bailed me out! enjoy.

One of the major differences in quality is the mouth. Not only on the inside, but the outside as well. I sewed the fabric. I didn't glue it. To me, that gives it a "cleaner" look. It's a little harder to do than gluing, but it's worth the effort. The blue puppet in the photos below isn't finished. He is missing hair and ears and details inside his mouth. In fact, all of the puppets could use a little more finishing work.

More puppet fun!

The blonde puppet and the spikey hair dude (below) are the first two puppets I ever made. I'm glad I found their pictures. Here are some more. The mean looking one is supposed to be a vin Diesel puppet. I made it for Tracy for Christmas. The stop two were my first puppets with a new pattern. I'll post again to show you the difference in quality between a few of my puppets.

Puppet-Tastic Journey

Someone asked me about some of the puppets I've made in the past, and that took me down memory lane. I tried to find photos for as many of them as i could. Unfortunately very few of them are completely finished in the photos, but they are close. Enjoy!

I went back to Jonah. That image still hasn't been "realized." I think I lack the reference images for a"by memory" sketch, and i lack the ability to accomplish photo realism in drawing to accomplish it. I also think Ratio is a huge element to making this composition look good. I don't have that either. So i started playing with different ways to express the idea. Then i was watching an episode of LA Ink (a show about a tattoo shop) and i thought about tribal art. that's what lead to the second image. What do you think?
