the repeating patterns of man's constructions (like railings) are hard for the artist to abstract and usually end up emphasizing the imperfectness of sketching. but the shadows on your railing help to add some sketch-friendly irregularity here.
The texture came as a result of multi-erasings. I felt it ruined it because I was looking for a smooth HB gray. Your observation teaches-it takes another eye to see more.
