good call - must be the cartoonists eye. it's a real-life version of a Mark Kistler "Hippo". this is the only example i could find online: http://www.drawsquad.com/lessons/less2.html he doesn't call it a hippo there . . . but it's upside down anyway.
Mark Kistler's book "Draw Squad" is great for kids and adults. He teaches how to draw "3-d stuff." Lots of drawing basics. Great lessons full of fun. The first test lesson is called the "Termite Club." It's a simple narrow box of a column holding up a pizza box shape. Kistler gives his stuff silly names. This 2-box arrangement he calls "The Termite Club." If you can draw a termite in 30 seconds, yet get to be an official member of his "Draw Squad" Art Club, membership card and all. That simple termite teaches some big things--basic two-point perspective and shading hard edges.
"The Hippo Club" is Kistler's round version of the Termite--teaching blended shading. But all very casually. And all interspersed with lots of cool stuff.
I don't know how many Termites I've drawn in my lifetime--hundreds I think.
this looks like an illustration i'd see in a children's book....similar to the style of curious george. Simple, but it has charm. thanks for sharing.
